Born and raised on planet Earth, life comes with shadows. That’s why Scottish skater John Rattray launched Why So Sad?—an ongoing campaign focused on mental health awareness and suicide prevention. The mission is simple: make movement a daily habit, because it’s good for the brain.
So lace up, grab your board or bike, and brighten the day. From backboards to skate sessions to backyard cookouts, the SB Dunk Low Why So Sad? carries a symbolic design meant to lift spirits as you chase positivity. Its worn-in Swoosh fades from Coastal Blue to Speed Yellow over time, a nod to the process Rattray describes as “the work it takes to move through emotional struggles and rebuild a foundation for happiness.” Built for comfort, the iconic skate shoe features a Zoom Air unit in the heel and breaks in easily with soft suede and premium nubuck. Embroidered graphics are a reminder to move, talk, and ask: Why so sad?
The story runs deeper. After losing his sister to suicide and confronting depression himself, Rattray created Why So Sad? in 2017 to open conversations about mental health within skateboarding and beyond. Using skate language with a playful tone, the platform tackles serious topics head-on. At its core, the campaign emphasizes physical activity—skating and cycling in particular—as key coping tools, because as Rattray says: “Mental health and physical health aren’t separate. Our bodies and brains are one system.” Time to get moving.
